How to analyze poetry?
what is "analysis .....?
It is helpful to think of analysis as decoding. Creative writers rarely say what they mean in a straightforward obvious way, and this is especially true of poets. However, they are trying to communicate with readers In doing so they use a variety of tools to enrich their purpose, and these tools are the elements of poetry ما هو التحليل ...؟ من الجيد ان نعتقد ان التحليل ترجمه لفكر الشاعر .... الشاعر نادرا ما يعنى ما يكتبه بطريقه واضحه ... وهذا هو الشاعر الجيد ... انه يحاول ان يتواصل مع القارئ باستخدام ادوات متنوعه ليثرى غرضه الشعرى ... وهذه الادوات هى عناصر الشعر What does "critical" mean To criticize means to judge the merits and faults of a poem. Questions to consider in this regard are Has he successfully expressed his theme? Has he written a "good" poem or a "great" poem ماذا يعنى النقد ... هو الحكم على القصيده من حيث المميزات والاخطاء ... وتطرح اسئله مثل .... هل الشاعر نجح فى التعبير عن موضوعه ..؟ وهل كتب قصيدهـ جيده ام قصيده رائعه ..؟ The followin are some helpfully tips for reading poetry Read the poem more than once Use a dictionary when you find a word about whose meaning you are unsure Read the poem slowly Pay attention to what the poem is saying; do not be distracted by the rhyme and rhythm of the poem Try reading the poem out loud to get a sense of the way the sounds of the poem effect its meaning ما يلى بعض الخطوات المساعدهـ لقراءة الشعر .... اقرأ القصيدهـ اكثر من مرهـ .... استخدم القاموس عندما تجد كلمة لست متأكد من معناها .... اقرأ القصيدهـ بتأنى ... اصغى لما تقوله كلمات القصيدهـ ولا تكن مشغول بايقاع القصيده والقافيه حاول ان تقرأ القصيدهـ بصوت مسموع لتشعر بتأثير اصوات الحروف على المعنى Elements of poetry عناصر الشعر Denotation and Connation Words in poems have denotations, or literal, easy-to-understand dictionary meanings, and connotations, or figurative, less specific and less direct meanings. The latter is the more important in poetry than the former. The figurative, or connotative, meaning of a word means everything that the word might imply besides its direct, dictionary meaning ex :denotative meaning of the word apple is something like this: It is the fruit of the apple tree The connotative meaning of a word, however, is much different. A red apple in a poem is never merely a red apple, but probably implies a lot of different things. The red color may symbolize passion, fertility, anger هناك معنى قريب ومعنى بعيد فى القصيده .... المعنى القريب او الصيغه من السهل فهمه ... اما المعنى البعيد وهو ما يسمى الدلاله هو معنى رمزى لا يكون معناه مباشر .... الدلاله او المعنى البعيد هو الاهم فى الشعر وهو يحتوى على كل معنى ممكن ان تحتويه الحروف .... مثال : المعنى القريب للتفاح انه فاكهه من شجرة التفاح ... لكن مثلا التفاح الاحمر فى المعنى البعيد او الدلاله ليست تشير الى التفاح الاحمر فقط ... لكن ربما تشير الى اشياء اخرى مثلا اللون الاحمر فى الشعر يدل على العاطفه او الخصوبه او الغضب ... Imagery : images make readers experience things vividly. To figure out the imagery in a poem, the reader should first make a list of every single mental picture, or visual image, that comes to mind as he reads the poem. He can then go back and find other kinds of ideas that have to do with physical sensations--sounds, tastes, smells and so on .Finally, he can go back and think about all the ideas these different images could imply--figure out their connotations, in other words الصورهـ .... الصور او التشبيهات تجعل القراء يختبرون الاشياء بشكل واضح ... لكى تفهم الصور فى القصيده ... يجب عليكـ اولا ان تصنع قائمه بكل صوره عقليه او تشبيه مرئى التى تأتى الى العقل عند قراءة القصيدهـ .. يمكنك العوده وايجاد انواع انواع اخرى من الافكار التى تتوافق مع الاحاسيس العقليه .., الاصوات , الاذواق... بايجاز .. يمكنك ان ترجع الى القصيدهـ وتفكر فى كل الافكار والصور المختلفه التى من الممكن ان تدل عليه وتفهم مضمونها ... Figurative Language figurative language is a way of describing an ordinary thing in an un-ordinary way اللغه الرمزيه ..... ( مظاهر الجمال فى القصيدهـ ) هى طريقة وصف شئ عادى بطريقه غير عاديه .... Smile A simile is an explicit, or clear and direct, comparison between two things that are basically unalike using dead-giveaway words such as "like", "as though", "seems", "similar to", "than", or "as". التشبيه ...: هو عقد مقارنه مباشره بين شيئين غير متشابهين فى الاساس باستخدام اداة تشبيه ( مثل )... M e t a p h o r indirect comparison between two things that are basically unalike. In " m e t a p h o r ", the figurative term is substituted for or identified with the literal term ex : "The fire eye in the clouds survives the gods" ****phor. Here, the sun is compared to an eye--one that has seemingly eternal life, الاستعارهـ ..... هى مقارنه غير مباشره بين شيئين غير متشابهين .. فى الاستعارهـ التعبير الرمزى يحل بديلا للتعبير الحرفى مثال : " العين المضيئه فى الغيوم تنقذ الالهه " هنا استعارهـ حيث صور الشمس بالعين وترمز الى الحياهـ الخالدهـ... Personification Personification is a kind of ****phor, and it means to speak of an impersonal thing, such as a season, a natural element, any object, a country, etc., as though it were a person. التشخيص : نوع من انواع الاستعارهـ ... لكنه فيها يصور اشياء جامده كفصول السنه او عناصر الطبيعه او بلاد بأشخاص Synecdoche Synechdoche is a way of naming a thing: the word for a part of a thing is substituted for the whole. For example, in the sentence "I bought a new set of wheels this morning," the word "wheels" is substituted for the word "car." وهى سرد الجزء ليدل على الكل .... مثل انا اشتريت مجموعه من العجلات هذا الصباح .... كلمة العجلات استبدلت مكان كلمة سيارهـ ... Metonymy Mentonymy is a way of naming a thing: a thing closely related to the thing actually meant is used to name it. For example, "He came from excellent blood" substitutes the term "blood" for "family", and expresses the idea that an individual comes from a "good الكنايه ... وهو ذكر صفه قريبه من اسم لتدل عليه .... مثل " هو من دم جيد " كلمة الدم هنا حلت مكان كلمة العائله ... وهو يقصد انه من عائله جيدهـ ... Symbol A symbol means what it is, but at the same time it represents something else, too. For example, "the straw that broke the camel's back" is a symbol of a last, remaining bit of patience with a difficult, ongoing situation. الرمز ... الرمز يرمز لنفسه لكنه ايضا يرمز الى شئ اخر .... مثل القشه التى قصمت ظهر البعير ... القشه هنا ترمز الى اخر شئ فى الصبر وصل اليه Paradox A paradox occurs when two things that should not be able to exist at the same time are said, in a poem, to exist at the same time. For example, it is impossible that it be both night and day, both spring and fall, both past and present at the same time التناقض .. عندما يذكر فى القصيده شيئين متناقضين لا يأتيان معا مثل الليل والنهار , الربيع والخريف , الحاضر والماضى فى وقت واحد alliteration it is the similitary of first letters in the same line الجناس هو تشابه الحروف الاولى من بعض الكلمات فى السطر الشعرى Tone of the poem Is the speaker serious or joking, ironic or straightforward, condemning, approving or dispassionate, lighthearted or depressed, loving or angry? نغمة القصيدهـ .. هل الكاتب فى قصيدته جاد , ساخر , مباشر , يدين , عاطفى , متشائم .. محب , غاضب .... الخ At last steps of analysis : 1-who is the speaking 2-to whom ? 3-the theme of the poem 4- explanation of the poem 5-the tone of the poem 6- figurative and rhetorical وفى النهايه خطوات التحليل 1- اسم الشاعر 2- لمن كتب الشاعر القصيدهـ 3-موضوع القصيده 4- شرح القصيده 5-نغمة القصيدهـ االاساليب البلاغيه والجماليه فى القصيدهـ لكم كل الاحترام والتقدير
